Em dash and music(al) lover. Glass half-full. Always ready to entertain hypotheticals.

Tairan Zhang is a summer fellow at Upturn. As a rising senior at Cornell University, Tairan’s coursework spans topics in politics, law, and computing. His interests lie at the intersection of these subjects, focusing on labor, racial justice, privacy, and algorithmic bias. Tairan has conducted research under Dr. Aleksandr Michuda and Dr. Aditya Vashistha on rural-urban linkages in Uganda and has served as a teaching assistant for several interdisciplinary computing courses. He hopes to contribute to Upturn’s mission of advancing equity and justice this summer by investigating problems with the technological status quo.

Tairan is an Information Science and Government student at Cornell University and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He loves playing tennis, ping-pong, and the violin in his free time.
