Amber Akemi Piatt is the Managing Director of Upturn. Based in Washington DC, Upturn advances equity and justice in the design, governance, and use of technology.

Amber has an extensive background in policy advocacy, participatory research, and communications. Her work broadly focuses on remedying social inequities, with deep expertise in policing, incarceration, immigration, public health, and violence prevention. Previously, she was the Health Instead of Punishment Program Director at Human Impact Partners (HIP) where she worked collaboratively with grassroots groups and coalitions to address the health harms of the criminal legal system. Her publications have appeared in books, academic journals, and global and local media, such as The San Francisco Chronicle.

Amber received a Master of Public Health in health and social behavior from UC Berkeley and a Bachelor of Arts in psychology and Spanish from UCLA. She is an alumna of the Dr. Beatriz María Solís Policy Institute.
