Emma Weil is a Research Assistant at Upturn. Before coming to D.C., Emma interned at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society, researching and writing about Internet of Things surveillance for the Berklett Cybersecurity project. Emma uses their background in computer science to help analyze the disparate impact of new technologies, paying close attention to the vulnerable communities often left out of the design processes. At Upturn, Emma is currently researching law enforcement’s use of technology, and assisting with technical and policy research across Upturn's projects.
Emma has a B.A. in computer science from Harvard University, where they focused on systems engineering as well as the history of technology. Outside the office, they can frequently be found reading on the bus or at a punk concert.
