Aaron Rieke is a Managing Director at Upturn. Based in Washington D.C., Upturn works at the intersection of social justice and technology, to ensure that new technology reflects the interests and needs of those at the margins. Recently, Aaron has focused on consumer finance, marketing, and other issues affecting people’s economic well-being. He has authored influential reports on online payday lending, lead generation, and new types of credit data. He works closely with major civil rights organizations, consumer groups, and companies to drive positive change.
Aaron has more of a decade of professional experience at the nexus of technology, law, and policy. Prior to joining Upturn, Aaron served as an Attorney in the Federal Trade Commission’s Division of Privacy and Identity Protection, and was a Ron Plesser Fellow and Staff Attorney at the Center for Democracy. He has also worked as web developer, a professional tutor, a filmmaker, and a forest ranger. He still codes in his free time.
Aaron earned a B.A. in Philosophy from Pacific Lutheran University and a J.D. from Berkeley Law, with a Certificate of Law and Technology. While at Berkeley Law, Aaron was a Fellow at the Berkeley Center for Law and Technology. He misses the West Coast.
